Teaching aims:

1. Can help students develop their reading abilities

2. Can help students learn about body language

3. Can help students know the culture about different body languages

Teaching importance and difficulties

1. Can help students develop their reading abilities

2. Can help students know the culture about different body languages

Teaching procedure:

Step1. Pre-reading

1. T: First, let’s watch a video. After watching, please answer my questions: What did people say in this video?

S: People said hello/hi/...

T: They said hello/... to greet others. So different people in different countries have their own mother language. For example Miss Chen knows Chinese people speak Chinese. What language do you know?

S: ... people speak ... (English/Japanese/German/French)

2. T: Now look at Miss Chen carefully, can you guess what language is it?(老师做几个肢体动作)

S: Body language.

T: Yes, it is body language. (教读,并贴板书)

3. T: Do you know body language? Let’s play some games about body language.

(1) Quick response

T: You will see some pictures, if you know what does it mean, please put up your hands quickly.(2个图片)What does it mean?

S: It means ...

T: Good job. So sometimes people use their hands and fingers to show their ideas, we can call them gestures. Can you show me other gestures?

S做动作说It means...

(2) Magic eyes

T: Please look at the baby’s face, pay attentions to the facial expressions. You can say one two stop. How is the baby now?

S: She is sad/...

T: This time you can work in 2, act and say.

(3) Look & guess

T: Look at the body movements, what does it mean?

S: It means ...

T: This time you can work in groups, act and say.

T: So we know gestures, facial expressions and body movements are body language.

Step2. While-reading

1. T: Today let’s read a picture book about it. Look at the cover of this picture book. What can you see?

S: I can see the title body language/ a girl is smiling/happy...

T: Do you have any questions about this picture book?

S: Why is the girl so happy?/...

T: You have a lot of questions about this picture book. I think after reading you will know the answers.

2. T: Now let’s read and answer. I will give you 30 seconds, so you should read quickly, then answer my question: How many parts can you divide this picture book into?

S: Three.

T: Why? Can you find the key sentences?

S: Part1 is “When we were babies, we already knew how to use body language.”

Part2 is “Body language is much more honest than words.”

Part3 is “Body language has different meanings in different countries.”

3. T: First let’s talk about Part1. When we were babies, we already knew how to use body language. But how? When we wanted a toy, what body language can we use? When we wanted a hug, what body language can we use?

S: When we wanted a toy, we pointed to the toy. When we wanted a hug, we opened our arms.

T: Now let’s listen and say.

S: When we wanted a toy, we pointed to the toy. When we wanted a hug, we opened our arms.(贴板书)

4. T: Why do babies use body language?

S: Because they can’t speak, but they want to show their ideas.

5. T: Look, as babies grew up, they learned to speak. Do they still use body language?

S: Yes.

6. T: Look at this baby, she grows up ,grows up and grows up. As the little girl grows up, she still often uses body language. Look at this picture, what body language does she use? (老师做动作)

S: She is touching her head.

T: What does it mean?

S: It means she is very sorry/she doesn’t know what should she do...

T: Look at this picture. Who can imitate these body languages? (选三个女生上台表演) Ready, go.

What does this body language mean?(老师一个一个指着询问)

S: It means ...

T: Great! So different body language has different meanings.

7. T: What about our adults? According to the woman and the man ,what do you want to say ?

S: Sometimes, body language is much more honest than words.

T: Why?

8. Let’s read and talk. You can read on page 8-11, pay attention to the details of the pictures and answer my question: What does the woman/the man say?

S: The woman says “Yes!” and the man says “I didn’t see it yesterday.”

T: Look at the woman, she says “Yes!” , but does she really mean yes?

S: No, she uses this body language. (做动作)

T: Look at the man, he says “I didn’t see it yesterday.” Is he telling the truth?

S: No, he uses this body language. (做动作)

9. T: Now look at the woman, the woman says “Yes!”, but what is her body movements?

S: She crosses her arms across her chest.(教读并贴板书)

T: What does her body language mean?

S: The body language means “I don’t want to listen.” “I don’t agree.”/...

11. T: Now let’s read this part following the tape. (学生们一句句跟读)

12. T: Do you know the real meaning of body language in your daily life? Now let’s try to act it with your partner. These two pictures can help you. You can choose one to act and you can also act by yourself. (喊两组同学上前表演) What is his/her body language? What does it mean?

S: He/ She ... It means ...

T: When we communicate with others, try to observe.

13. T: Now look at this body language. Do you know what does it mean?

S: It means good/...

T: Yes, in our China it means good/... Do you know what can we name it? Look at this finger, what finger is it? We can call it thumb(老师做动作) Look, up ,up up up. So we can call it thumbs up.(教读,贴板书)

T: Some body language has totally different meanings in different countries.

14. T: Next let’s read to know more about this body language. You can read on page 12-13 in pairs and find the answers about these two questions.

Which are the two countries ? What does the body language mean in these two countries?

S: The two countries are Germany and Japan. (教读并贴板书)

In Germany, the “thumbs up” sign means “One”. In Japan, the “thumbs up” sign means “Five”.

15. T: But sometimes different body language can mean the same meaning. Look at the pictures about body language, what are they about? They are about greetings in different countries. Let’s try to learn. When you greet each other you can do some body language and say these sentences. I will choose the picture, then let’s act it together. (一组一个动作)

16. T: The same body language in different countries has the same meaning. Do you know what body language is it?

S: Smile.(教读贴板书)

T: Yes. There is one kind of body language that never needs an explanation——Smile.(跟读) Are you happy today? Let’s smile together. Miss Chen hopes you can be happy and smile every day.
